It is awful for the Madeiran people.
It seems that the cemetery is close to one of the three rivers. Today I saw how it is now, with all the damage done and mud on the main streets.

Did your father live in Madeira? Or did he want to be buried there, in the middle of the Atlantic?

La lectora corrent:
My father was very Finnish.
He didn't want to be buried there. We were on a holiday, I was 19 years old. He died at 51 of a coronary at the hotel. It was New Year's Eve. No crematory on the island. No ships to the mainland Portugal. Until now the place looked so beautiful, can't imagine what has happened. The British Cemetery is surrounded by walls. Except from the gate. As we have got a headstone there it would be nice if they ever could clean the place up. The cemetery belonged to a British foundation. It was as close one could get to a Lutheran cemetery. I guess I should follow BBC and the local net news. But I can't do anything from here. We used to visit Funchal a lot. Especially for Christmas New Year. The celebrations are beautiful in the large hotels. But now we come to Barcelona instead:)
